Why Trauma Therapists Need Support, Not Toughness

Trauma therapy changes the people who do it.

You sit with the hardest parts of people’s lives. You absorb stories, emotions, and moments that don’t just disappear at the end of the day.

Even when you love this work, even when you’re well trained, that impact adds up.

Trauma therapist support

This is where The BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective comes in!

What makes this work even heavier isn’t the trauma itself. It’s having nowhere to bring your own reactions. Nowhere to say, “That session stayed with me,” without worrying about being judged, minimized, or told to just be more resilient.

Trauma therapists don’t need to be tougher.

They need spaces where being affected by the work is expected, understood, and met with care.

  • Spaces where it’s okay to talk about how the work actually lands

  • Spaces where consultation is honest, kind, and grounded in integrity

  • Spaces where you can be human first, and a skilled professional at the same time

Hear it From our Members First -

  • This community is like a warm hug! Everyone is truly kind, welcoming, and inclusive. The opportunities for further training and consultation are endless. Most of all, we’re all truly recognized as human beings first. You won’t get all that out of the average Facebook therapist group! 😉

-Marina B., LPC and Private Practice Owner

  • “I decided to join BRAVE because I needed the support. I’m a super sensitive person and really didn’t want to burnout because I love being a trauma therapist! I just knew I really needed this community.”

-Sarah S., LMFT and Private Practice Owner

  • “As a group practice owner, I knew I needed to find outside support and consultation and I was really looking for my own sense of community. Knowing that there is real-time support and dedicated consultation hours is so helpful! And the continued contact with everyone in BRAVE has been so special, knowing they’re always there means a lot.”

-Lindsay B., LICSW, Group Practice Owner, EMDR CIT

  • “I joined BRAVE because knowing I would have support for myself as a trauma therapist was just so appealing. All along the way, Jenny has been so encouraging of me, even to the point of being the first person to call me a trauma therapist!”

-Elly B., LPC and Private Practice Owner

  • “Having an outlet helps me to stay healthier myself. Getting support from others who can relate is part of what I have realized to be key in my personal health equation. It allows me to not burn out, to feel heard, and to have a safe place to discuss my own feelings.”

-Andrea T., PhD and Academic Clinician

What our community is saying:

  • “Working with Jenny gave me the hope I needed to keep going and to realize I did not have to totally switch careers. It also taught me about my own self-care practices and awareness of my own needs/feelings, not just those of my clients.”

    -Alisha B. LCSW

  • “BRAVE as helped normalize my moments of burnout and fatigue, which has helped my get through what to do in those moments. This community has also given me tools to support my wellbeing in addition to supporting clients going through similar issues.”

    -Samuel M., LMFT

  • “BRAVE has given me something that is lacking as a private practice owner- consistency. Although I'm growing my practice and often have to choose a paying appointment over a BRAVE call, it is so grounding to see those calls on my calendar and know that I can always drop in.”

    -Sonia A., LPC

  • “Jenny was the best possible sounding board for questions both big and small. She offered a unique perspective that really allowed me to broaden my own thinking.”

    -Michael, V., Grad Student

  • “BRAVE is a wonderful and supportive community. I particularly appreciate the support received through the asynchronous consultation group chat in the Signal app. Jenny is kind, approachable, and human.”

-Emily P, LLP and Brainspotting Consultant

The support you’ve been looking for to stay in the field you love is here.

Discover what the BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective can do for you!

I’m here to be BRAVE with you!

I have worked in trauma since 2005. I love this work, and can’t imagine myself doing anything else, but that doesn’t mean I’m immune to the effects of vicarious trauma and burnout.

I’ll never forget the slow creep of vicarious trauma that overshadowed my first year as a fully licensed clinician. I was working my dream job at a Level 1 Trauma Center. The problem? I was alone, without anyone to talk to about my work. Of course I didn’t acknowledge the VT, but my then partner (now husband) sure did.

One day, I got an email from him with a link to a google search about “how to help my trauma therapist girlfriend deal with her work.”  WTF?!?! Let me tell you about the rage…and embarrassment…and regret…that I had let it get that bad.

I get how suddenly vicarious trauma can rear its ugly head, stealing our energy and patience, tempting us to isolate and check out. I also know that healing is possible, especially when we are surrounded by a community of trauma therapists who truly get it.

As a trauma therapist, I know most people don’t sign up for this work, which is fine! And, that’s why I started BRAVE - a place where trauma therapists can come together, support our collective health and well-being, and finally breathe again.

Real results from real trauma therapists -

What could be possible if you took the leap?

I love everything about The BRAVE Collective! The content and consultation calls has helped me to connect with others in the community. We have learned from each other and offer much needed support. I have also learned a lot from Jenny's content on managing vicarious trauma.”

-Trisha O., LPCC-S, LICDC

“Trauma work and the work of helping others can be draining, even when we love the work! Having an outlet helps me to stay healthier myself. Getting support from others who can relate is part of what I have realized to be key in my personal health equation. It allows me to not burn out, to feel heard, and to have a safe place to discuss my own feelings.”

-Andrea T. Ph.D.

You might be thinking…

“How could an online community possibly help me with vicarious trauma?”

That’s a fair question!

Many trauma therapists have been burned by online spaces that feel performative, judgmental, or superficial. Places where you’re expected to have the right answer, the right modality, or the right level of resilience.

BRAVE was created specifically to be different.

What makes this community supportive isn’t the platform. It’s the culture.

Inside BRAVE, you’re surrounded by trauma therapists who understand what this work actually asks of you.

  • You don’t have to explain why a session stayed with you

  • You don’t have to justify needing consultation

  • And you don’t have to pretend you’re unaffected

Members show up with honesty, integrity, and care. Feedback is thoughtful, kind, and grounded in real clinical experience, not criticism or hierarchy.

Check It Out for Yourself -

Our members say they feel safer, steadier, and more supported here than they ever expected to feel in an online space.

Hear it straight from the heart of BRAVE -

  • I tell people--for $12 measley bucks you get a community who GETS being a trauma therapist, incredible educational content, group consultation, a private social media platform, and a new best friend in Dr. Jenny Hughes! I value the different experiences and trainings everyone has had, here, too and I have not ever once felt judged or shamed.

-Katie G., LPC, EMDRIA Approved Consultant

  • “Therapy is already hard; add trauma to it and the chances of burning out inadvertently are sometimes unnoticeable until it’s too late. Anyone doing trauma work should have a team at their side. The years of experience that Jenny has had providing trauma work allows for not only support to keep going but someone to help you think outside the box.”

    — Hikari W., LCSW

  • “Jenny and The BRAVE Collective are invaluable assets and resources for any clinician working with trauma survivors. This program bridges the gap in resources and sense of community for trauma-focused clinicians and promotes clinician vitality so they can show up more effectively for themselves and their clients.”

    Shara G., PhD, LMHC-QS and EMDR-CIT

  • “Jenny is so knowledgeable about Vicarious Trauma and what to do when you're experiencing it. In just a few short months of working with her, I feel so well prepared in AND out of session as a trauma therapist. I feel more relaxed going into hard sessions because I know I'll be able to address the VT if/when it arises.”

    -Sarah S., LMFT

I welcome any and all questions you have, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.

  • This is a question I often hear from therapists. My response? Membership in The BRAVE Collective isn’t dependent on your degree, how long you’ve been in the field, or the type of trauma work you do. If you treat trauma in any capacity, this space is for you. The BRAVE Collective is a container to hold both the darkness and the light that comes with guiding our clients through their painful pasts, and it’s available to all therapists supporting clients through stress and trauma.

  • Nope! We welcome licensed therapists, pre-licensed therapists, and grad students working to become therapists!

  • This is such an important question to address - yes, in The BRAVE Collective, we will be talking about our experiences of vicarious trauma and about the things that have caused our VT. However, The Collective is NOT a place to just dump on your fellow members - it is a space where we take an open yet solution-focused approach to managing VT and preventing burnout. Also, I take my role as the facilitator very seriously and it is my job to protect our community so we can be vulnerable and courageous with each other in a protected space.

  • Yes! I’ll be available in our private community, on our Signal app consultation thread, and on our monthly calls. If you ever get stuck or have a question, please feel free to post a question in our community or bring it up on the call so I can help. This is also a great way to get support from other BRAVE members!

  • All content and guest expert video calls will be recorded so that you can catch the replay when you can’t attend. These videos are then available on demand in the BRAVE Resource Library when you want to go back for a refresher. You will have unlimited access to them for the duration of your membership. Consultation calls are not recorded to protect privacy.

  • I know you want to make sure you are making a smart investment before you join us in BRAVE.
